Continuous heavy rainfall in the Ghat areas and Maharashtra’s Belagavi district has caused a sharp rise in water levels of the Krishna River and its tributaries, triggering a potential flood threat along the riverbanks.
The Krishna River’s inflow has surged past 1 lakh cusecs, with significant water level increases also observed in the Dudaganga, Vedaganga, and Hiranyakeshi rivers.
The Hiranyakeshi River is flowing at full capacity, flooding low-lying areas along its banks. In the Chikkodi sub-division, 11 bridges are submerged, forcing commuters to use alternate routes.
The Madamakkanal–Yarnal bridge over the Hiranyakeshi in Hukkeri taluk has also gone underwater. Despite flood risks, locals were seen using the bridge until barricades were placed by the district administration following a news report. Police personnel have also been stationed in the area.
In Kallola village of Chikkodi taluk, the Datta temple, located on the banks of the Krishna River, is submerged. With the river flowing above the danger mark, Chikkodi Tahsildar Chidambaram Kulkarni visited the site to inspect and review precautionary measures.
