A 51-year-old man has died, and at least 30 people have fallen ill in a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak in Kasanal village near Nippani, Belagavi district.
Pandurang Baccharam Patil passed away in a private hospital in Maharashtra on Monday. He had a kidney condition, but his health deteriorated after consuming contaminated water, his family told reporters in Nippani on Wednesday.
According to Taluk Health Officer Sukumar Bhagai, a team of doctors and Health Department officials quickly arrived in the village and are currently stationed there to monitor the situation.
Initial reports suggest that sewage water may have mixed with the village’s drinking water supply. The affected individuals have been admitted to hospitals in Nippani and nearby towns in Maharashtra, and all are reported to be in stable condition, the doctor confirmed.
