The Karnataka government is demanding an explanation from the authorities regarding the deaths of 169 infants at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) over the past ten months. Of these, approximately 125 infants were born at BIMS, while the remainder were delivered elsewhere but died after being admitted to the hospital.
In recent months, 41 of these deaths occurred. Medical professionals informed the district administration that the causes of death included 28 infants succumbing to various infections, 36 due to respiratory issues, six from heart and other complications, six from fecal matter ingestion, 11 for unspecified reasons, and 79 who were born prematurely.
Ashok Shetty, the hospital director, stated that some fatalities were beyond medical control and denied claims of disrupted oxygen supply, noting that the hospital has its own oxygen production unit established during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar has requested a report from the Department of Medical Education, stating, “I will personally investigate with senior officials and take steps to rectify any mistakes.” She assured that the Karnataka government would provide the necessary infrastructure support to prevent future incidents.
District in-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi announced that he would ask doctors to explain the situation at the zilla panchayat meeting in Belagavi on November 11. He indicated that the state government would order an inquiry and take action against doctors and officials if negligence is found. Additionally, he mentioned plans to assess hospital operations and address any staffing shortages.
