Sachin Vitthala Patil, a Hubli resident and an SDC employee at the Belgaum District Collector’s Office, has been identified as the groom. He was reportedly sent to Hindalga Prison and was originally set to marry a woman from a village in Khanapur taluk on December 31.
On December 31, the wedding ceremony began at Lokmany Marriage Hall in Khanapur. However, it was disrupted as the demand for additional dowry led to the marriage falling apart. Subsequently, the bride’s family filed a complaint on the same day. In response, the police promptly arrived at the marriage hall, initiated an inquiry, and apprehended the groom.
The bride’s family members mentioned that during the engagement in May, there was a discussion about providing a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and 50 grams of gold. On December 31, during the ongoing marriage ceremony, Sachin, the groom, reportedly requested Rs 10 lakh and 100 grams of jewelry. Despite their refusal, the groom insisted that the marriage wouldn’t proceed without additional dowry. And as a result, the bride’s family had to inform the Khanapur police.
Following this, Khanapur’s Police Sub-Inspector, MB Biradara, along with other personnel, promptly arrived at the location and initiated an inquiry. The accused groom has been charged under three sections of the Indian Penal Code – Section 303 (threat to kill), Section 376 (rape), and Section 420 (cheating) at the Khanapur police station. Following the judge’s orders, the accused has been sent to Hindalaga Jail.
