Two wagons of a goods train derailed near the Belagavi railway station around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, disrupting train movement on the Belagavi-Miraj route. The train, which was carrying iron ore from the Jindal factory and heading toward Miraj, went off track while entering the station, close to the Belagavi airport.
The derailment led to a temporary suspension of train services in both directions. Several trains had to be regulated or halted en route, including the Chalukya Sharavati Express, LTT Dadar, Ajmer Express, Rani Chennamma Express, Bengaluru-Jodhpur Express, Bhagat Ki Kothi Express, Castle Rock-Miraj Passenger, and Haripriya Express.
South Western Railway reported that the affected trains included:
- Upward direction: Londa–Miraj at Desur, Mysuru–Belagavi Express at Khanapur, Bengaluru–Sangli Express at Londa, Bengaluru–Jodhpur Express at Devrai, and Tirupati–Kolhapur at Hubballi.
- Downward direction: Ajmer–Bengaluru Express at Raibag, Miraj–Hubballi at Kudachi, Dadar Central–Puducherry at Ghataprabha, and Dadar–Hubballi at Sulebhavi.
Railway staff, including senior officers such as the general manager and assistant general manager, arrived on-site to assess the situation. An accident relief train was dispatched from Hubballi to speed up the restoration process. The derailed location, accessible from the Belagavi–Khanapur road, drew several bystanders looking to gather information.
Authorities stated that restoration efforts are underway and expected to take approximately three to four hours. Arrangements have been made for stranded passengers at respective stations.
