After overseeing the progress of national highway projects in the state during a review meeting on Saturday, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced plans for a new parallel road connecting Sankhali-Chorla-Belgaum.
Responding to Goa’s proposal for an environmentally protective road from Sanquelim to Belgaum via Khanapur, Gadkari has requested the submission of a detailed project report (DPR), as informed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the Public Works Department (PWD) portfolio.
Amid a longstanding demand to widen the Sanquelim to Belgaum road due to increased traffic, Sawant suggested that constructing a parallel road instead of expanding it to a four-lane road would address the issue while preserving the environment. He noted that work would commence upon obtaining forest clearance.
During the review meeting, attended by Union Minister of State V K Singh and Sawant, plans for the national highway from Anmod to the sugar factory and Khandepar were discussed, with assurance from Sawant that construction would commence soon, and the Karnataka stretch would be completed.
