Two tractors which were carrying sugarcane from Belgavi to Maharashtra were ignited in the Nippani taluk’s Karadaga village of the Belgavi district. The tractors were set on fire by the farmers, who were protesting against the delayed payments for the sugarcane they earlier supplied to the factories. It is said that the tractors were carrying sugarcane to a factory in Maharashtra’s Hapari from Nej village in Chikkodi Taluk. As per the reports, the fire was started by a 15 wrongdoer on Tuesday night.
There has been a halt in the supply of sugarcane from farmers in Maharashtra after they initiated a protest against sugar factories for delayed payments of their product.
The farmer leader Raju Shetty is leading the ongoing protest. Farmers in Maharashtra expressed discontent when sugar factories began buying sugarcane from Belagavi farmers.
A complaint has been filed by Amith Bojkar, whose tractor was set on fire, in Sadalga Police Station. The engine of the tractors were damged, with an estimated loss of ₹8 lakh. There is currently an ongoing inquiry into the issue.
