A violent clash broke out between two groups in Solapur village, Belagavi district, on Sunday night following the alleged desecration of a Durga Devi idol during its immersion.
The confrontation escalated during the immersion procession, resulting in three people sustaining injuries. In the chaos, two motorbikes and a car were also damaged.
Police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. Heavy security has been deployed in the area to prevent any further disturbances.
Following the incident, the police conducted route marches to maintain peace. SP Belagavi, Bheema Shankar Guled, stated, “The altercation began between Amita Naika and Firoz. As both groups gathered, police intervened with a baton charge to restore order. We have deployed two KSRP units along with additional forces. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Sankeshwar police station, and the situation is currently stable.”
A similar incident of violence during a Durga idol immersion was reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district. Clashes broke out a day earlier in the Mahasi area, leading to protests.
In connection with the Mahasi unrest, police have taken 30 individuals into custody and are actively searching for the primary accused. Security has been tightened in the area today after protestors vandalized shops, as authorities work to prevent further disruptions.
