Chief Minister Siddaramaiah warned on Wednesday that anyone attempting to disrupt the AICC session in Belagavi on December 26-27 would face legal consequences.
The warning came in response to the BJP’s announcement of an anti-waqf rally in Belagavi on the same dates as the AICC session, which will mark the centenary of the 1924 Congress session chaired by Mahatma Gandhi.
“This is nothing but an attempt to disrespect Gandhi. If not for his leadership in the freedom struggle, where would we be today? Our right to protest is also a result of his movement,” the CM stated.
He further questioned whether BJP leaders understood these basic truths, accusing them of opposing the values of the freedom struggle and the Constitution. “They do not believe in the Constitution but in the Manu Smriti,” he added.
Siddaramaiah also criticized the BJP for politicizing the Winter Session. “As the responsible opposition party, the BJP should focus on development issues, but instead, they are playing politics,” he said.
Responding to questions, the CM dismissed the BJP’s demand to transfer the waqf issue to the CBI, pointing out that during their time in power (2008-2013), they did not hand over any such case. “They have no moral authority to make this demand,” he concluded.
