Belagavi has been allotted 100 electric buses under the Central Government’s PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed the Rajya Sabha on February 9, 2026.
Responding to an unstarred question (No. 1020) raised by MP Iranna Kadadi, Minister of State Tokhan Sahu said that 750 electric buses have been approved for 10 cities across Karnataka, with Belagavi receiving 100 of them.
₹6.85 Crore Approved for Infrastructure
According to Annexure-I of the reply, ₹6.85 crore has been sanctioned for civil infrastructure development in Belagavi under the scheme. The PM-eBus Sewa Scheme plans to introduce 10,000 air-conditioned electric buses in over 100 cities, giving priority to smaller towns and areas without organised public transport. The scheme also offers Central support for depot construction and power facilities.
Bus Stand Projects Completed
The Karnataka Government stated that the Central Bus Station in Belagavi was built and inaugurated on December 27, 2022. In addition, the City Bus Station developed under the Smart City project was inaugurated on October 4, 2025.
12.38 km of Cycle Tracks and Footpaths
As part of Smart City works, around 12.38 kilometres of Non-Motorised Vehicle lanes, including cycle tracks and pedestrian pathways, have been created along key roads. These smart corridors aim to enhance road safety and encourage eco-friendly transport.
Ring Road Project Update
On the proposed Ring Road project to ease traffic congestion, the National Highways Authority of India has taken charge. As per Annexure-II, Package-I is in the bidding phase, while Packages II and III are currently at the DPR stage.
Focus on Sustainable Transport
The Ministry reaffirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme is focused on lowering emissions and strengthening sustainable urban mobility in tier-2 cities such as Belagavi.
These initiatives are expected to boost the city’s public transport system and support long-term traffic management and environmental protection.
