The Belagavi City Corporation is currently devising a new initiative aimed at efficient solid waste management within the city. As part of this endeavor, the Corporation plans to acquire approximately 20 to 25 acres of land either through lease or outright purchase. Landowners in or near the city possessing parcels measuring 20 or 25 acres are encouraged to contribute their land for the project, assuring them of fair compensation based on prevailing market rates. Commissioner Ashok Dudagunti emphasized the municipality’s commitment to acquiring the land at a reasonable and mutually beneficial price.
In a comprehensive review session, Guardian Minister Satish Jarkiholi and Women Child Welfare Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar extensively deliberated on the solid waste project. During the meeting, both ministers expressed their commitment to launch four fresh initiatives specifically targeted at efficient solid waste management within the city.
Adhering to the Solid Waste Management regulations of 2016, the upcoming project aims to alleviate the strain on the Turmuri Garbage Depot. Initially established in 2006, the Turmuri project encountered resistance from nearby residents. As an alternative, a composting venture was implemented, operated in collaboration by Ramky Enviro and the CCB. This particular project operates under a 20-year contract, which is approaching its expiration date.
As per the existing agreement, the corporation is obligated to supply the company with 250 tons of waste each day. However, it is anticipated that the waste generation will escalate to approximately 300 to 400 tons per day in the near future.
Considering the impending expiration of the contract, the corporation plans to initiate operations at a new waste treatment facility before the current agreement comes to an end.
The upcoming waste treatment plant will operate daily within the city, ensuring efficient waste management.
