The Karnataka government has announced plans to open an 18-km stretch of the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS) for a forest safari, aiming to boost tourism in Belagavi. Tourism Minister H.K. Patil revealed the initiative, offering visitors a chance to explore the sanctuary’s diverse biodiversity.
Covering 19,042.58 hectares, the BWS is situated in the Mahadayi river catchment area and borders the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as the Mhadei and Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuaries in Goa. The sanctuary is home to tigers, leopons, bears, and a variety of bird species.
The region is also known for the Barapede caves, the sole breeding ground for Wroughton’s free-tailed bats in India. Its rich ecosystem serves as a vital wildlife corridor, making it an attractive spot for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
The safari is expected to drive tourism, fostering economic growth and creating job opportunities. With its blend of natural beauty and wildlife, Bhimgad is set to become a major tourist destination in Karnataka.
