BESCOM will soon install electric vehicle charging stations along the Bengaluru–Belagavi National Highway (NH-48) and at 40 toll plazas across Karnataka to strengthen long-distance EV travel. The move also integrates the ‘EV Mithra’ app for user convenience.
BESCOM to Electrify Key Highways
Aimed at reducing “range anxiety” for inter-city EV commuters, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited has unveiled a large-scale plan to expand charging infrastructure across major routes. The Bengaluru–Belagavi NH-48 is the focus of this rollout, supported by the Karnataka Energy Department to create a continuous electric corridor linking industrial areas, tourist spots, and border regions.
Enhancing Inter-City EV Connectivity
Officials said the project is designed to make EV travel more feasible beyond urban limits by addressing crucial gaps along economic corridors.
- Target Zones: Chargers will be installed at key toll plazas and junctions on the NH-48 route.
- Statewide Spread: The proposal includes 30 charging stations on state highways and 20 on national highways, awaiting approvals from KRDCL and NHAI.
- Tourism Circuits: Under the PM-E Drive scheme, chargers are also being added at KSTDC Mayura Hotels, Jungle Lodges & Resorts, and major temples.
Managing Director N. Shivashankar noted that the initiative aims to “accelerate Karnataka’s transition to clean energy” and build a stronger green mobility ecosystem.
Karnataka Leads EV Infrastructure Growth
Karnataka continues to top India in public EV charging facilities.
- Current Network: The state has 5,960 active public EV chargers, the highest nationally.
- EV Adoption: Karnataka’s EV penetration stands above 11%, surpassing the national average of 9%.
- Low Tariffs: BESCOM offers some of the most affordable EV charging rates in the country.
Tech Support via EV Mithra App
To complement physical infrastructure, BESCOM has upgraded its digital services through the ‘EV Mithra’ app.
- Features: Users can locate chargers, check live availability, and reserve slots.
- Solar Push: BESCOM has also launched India’s first solar-powered EV hub near Kempegowda International Airport, equipped with second-life batteries for renewable-energy charging.
