The stripping incident of a 42 year old dalit woman from Belgaum after her son eloped with a girl has been now covered by the global media house BBC. The incident occurred on December 11. Earlier, the Karnataka High Court directed national and regional TV channels to avoid the telecast of any interaction or interview with the victim. However, the Bench clarified that “this temporary directive is solely aimed at safeguarding the victim’s dignity, ensuring her identity remains undisclosed and protected.” The court also restricted visitors to the victim, allowing only family, statutory authorities & investigating agencies.
The home minister of Karnataka, G Parameshwara, discussed the incident in the legislative assembly and assured a strict action against the accused. The national president of the BJP, JP Nadda, labeled the incident as ‘shameful.” Subsequently, Nadda established a fact-finding team comprising women MPs, including Aprajita Sarangi, Sunita Duggal, Locket Chatterjee, Ranjeeta Koli, and Asha Lakra.
