Belgaum district has now emerged as the second-highest in the state for tourist destinations, with 100 sites recognized under the Tourism Policy 2024-29. The newly added attractions are Trikuteshwar Temple, Rajwada of Raibagh, and Kozhigudda.
Earlier, 97 destinations in the district had official recognition, which has now risen to a hundred. Belgaum’s tourism portfolio, known for its forts, ancient sculptures, palaces, war memorials, cultural heritage, waterfalls, and the charm of the Western Ghats, has seen steady growth in the past few years. Officials, however, acknowledge that many locations still lack basic facilities such as roads, rest houses, toilets, and information centers.
Tourist inflow has been rising consistently. While 61.61 lakh people visited in 2020, the numbers surged after Covid restrictions eased, touching 2.87 crore in 2022, followed by 3.50 crore and 3.10 crore in subsequent years. Domestic and international visitors are increasingly drawn to the district’s natural beauty, trekking trails, misty landscapes, food, culture, and handicrafts. Authorities believe the new tourism policy will boost local employment, entrepreneurship, and economic activity.
Newly recognized tourist spots
- Trikuteshwar Temple (Bailhongal taluk): Located on the Malaprabha river in Okkunda village, the three Jinalayas stand like an island, retaining their religious and heritage character despite the submergence of the surrounding ancient town.
- Rajwada of Raibagh: Built between 1904 and 1911 as the summer palace of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaja of Kolhapur, the site includes a 26-acre lake and temples. Once a seat of Kolhapur’s administration, it is now in decline due to poor upkeep.
- Kozhigudda (Raybag taluk): Around 123 km from Belgaum, it is known for its Dussehra palanquin festival at Ananda Ashram and an 18-foot granite idol of Kalika Devi atop a hill near the temple.
With a wealth of historical, religious, and natural attractions, Belgaum remains one of Karnataka’s leading tourism hubs, and authorities are urging the public to make greater use of the facilities being developed.
