The prolonged request for the partition of Belagavi, the state’s largest district in terms of geographical size, seems to be picking up speed. There is an expectation that the district might be divided into three distinct entities, aligning with the desires expressed by different local leaders and organizations over the past thirty years.
It is suggested by sources that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is poised to declare the establishment of new districts, Chikkodi and Gokak, during the forthcoming budget presentation on February 16. The state government has directed the district administration to provide detailed information on this proposal ahead of the budget session.
Several organizations and associations have consistently pushed for the creation of independent districts for Chikkodi and Gokak taluks to enhance administrative efficiency. Furthermore, leaders representing Bailhongal and Athani have also requested similar acknowledgment.
Supporters of the division contend that breaking up Belagavi into three districts would improve administrative efficiency. They claim that Chikkodi and Gokak have the necessary infrastructure and workforce to function as district headquarters. Additionally, leaders from various political parties, including Congress, BJP, and JDS in Chikkodi and Gokak, advocate for granting district status to these taluks.
