Residents residing in Ramthirth Nagar, within the jurisdiction of Malmaruti police station, have reportedly received a directive from the Belgaum police commissionerate, urging them to install CCTV cameras outside their homes. The initiative aims to combat rising burglary incidents, facilitating law enforcement in identifying and apprehending thieves in the district, according to sources familiar with the situation.
During regular community meetings, residents have been emphasized on the significance of having cameras and advised to install them based on their financial capabilities, stated a resident from the Tilakwadi police station limits. In particular, residents of Ramthirth Nagar revealed they were given a ten-day ultimatum to comply with the installation of cameras.
Allegedly, the police, facing challenges in controlling burglaries in the locality, have placed responsibility on residents for not installing CCTV cameras. Residents claim that an officer asserted that burglaries would cease if cameras were installed in front of their houses.
Expressing dissatisfaction, the residents, under the condition of anonymity, mentioned that they are being held accountable for the police’s failure to address the burglary issue. Advocates residing in the locality criticized the order, with one stating that they would have challenged it in court if given in writing.
While the directive was issued to various localities, certain areas did not face deadlines for camera installation. Belgaum North MLA Asif (Raju) Sait expressed his intention to discuss the matter with Police Commissioner SN Siddaramappa and address concerns raised by Ramthirth Nagar residents. He emphasized that making CCTV installation mandatory and withholding police services is incorrect.
In response to criticism, Police Commissioner SN Siddaramappa defended the inspector’s order, stating that citizens’ cooperation with the police is crucial in curbing anti-social activities. He emphasized that the inspector’s instructions should be seen as advice and followed as an order to ensure the safety of citizens.
