Anticipation fills the air in Belgaum as the city prepares for its 105th annual celebration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. More than just an event, it’s a nostalgic journey through history, a cultural spectacle honoring the revered warrior king. The grand procession is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, starting at 6 PM.
Looking back more than a hundred years, to the beginning of 1919, when the foundation for this magnificent celebration was laid. Imagine the streets decorated with bullock carts, as the inaugural procession in tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj traversed the lanes of Belgaum. At that time, it was a simple event, a modest homage by the community within their own surroundings.
As time progressed, the sense of solidarity among the mandals ignited a metamorphosis. Gradually, the celebration transcended into a grand event, attracting participants from every part of the city. Coconut and banana leaves adorned with colorful decorations served as the backdrop, with each display narrating its unique tale. What started as a humble tribute expanded into a rich tapestry of local concerns and historical narratives.
Presently, the essence of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s heritage beats within the core of Belgaum. Multitudes assemble along the streets, their faces illuminated with respect, while the magnificent procession traverses from Nargundkar Bhave Chowk to its finale at Kapileshwar Temple. Every corner is occupied, every viewpoint sought after, as the city engrosses itself in the visual and auditory reminiscences of bygone days.
However, the event transcends beyond the procession; it embodies a revival of culture. Amidst the crowds, fading arts are revitalized – the rhythmic clash of sticks in Lathi fights, the elegant movements of swords in simulated battles, the captivating performance of Lazim dance, and the skilled spinning of Zhanz Pathak. Every step, every rhythm echoes a tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, affirming his lasting legacy.
As the morning sun casts its glow upon the temple spires, the procession reaches its peak, a harmonious blend of reverence and reminiscence. In that instance, Belgaum is unified, connected by the strands of heritage and the essence of devotion to Lord Shiv that surpasses temporal boundaries.
