Persistent rainfall in the Western Ghats has led to the collapse of a temporary road, forcing the closure of the Belgaum-Goa highway.
The heavy downpour has caused a surge in the Malaprabha River’s water levels, resulting in the washing away of the temporary road built for ongoing bridge construction near Kusamali village in Khanapura taluk, where the river originates near Kanakumbi.
The affected route connects Belgaum to Goa via Jamboti and Chorla. With the old bridge being dismantled and a new one under construction, a makeshift dirt road was laid across the river to maintain traffic flow. However, the increased water flow has now eroded this temporary path, halting all traffic.
Currently, travelers are taking an alternate route via Khanapur and Ramanagara. Locals have urged authorities to expedite the bridge construction and reopen the road for public use.
