On Thursday, animal welfare organizations, activists, and enthusiasts in Belgaum presented a petition to Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil, urging the expeditious implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program due to the surge in dog bite incidents. Veterinary practitioner Praveen Mathapati, Varun Karkhanis from the Belgaum Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), and animal advocates Sourabh Savant and Nikita Kunte spoke to the press, denouncing any talks of mass euthanasia of stray dogs as unlawful.
They urged Deputy Commissioner Patil to direct officials from the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) to accelerate the implementation of the ABC program to address the issue of stray dog overpopulation. Dr. Praveen Mathapati highlighted the significance of raising public awareness regarding respectful interactions with stray dogs, discouraging any mistreatment and advocating for feeding practices to maintain their tranquility. He emphasized the necessity for a compassionate and animal-friendly community and the importance of educating individuals on empathy towards animals.
The surge in incidents of dog bites has stirred public frustration directed at both stray dogs and the Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) for their perceived lack of effective control measures. The Advocates Association of Human Rights (AAHR) has called for compensation to be provided to victims of dog bites and has cautioned that legal action may be pursued if appropriate measures are not implemented.
