The Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama in Belagavi celebrated its silver jubilee on Sunday, with Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Tourism Minister H.K. Patil stressing the need to create an environment where people of all religions can coexist peacefully. Highlighting Swami Vivekananda’s teachings as a guiding force for harmony and national progress, Patil said they offer a roadmap for peaceful coexistence and unity.
The Belagavi Ashrama holds deep spiritual and historical value, as Swami Vivekananda had stayed there for nine days during his 1892 visit. The event saw the presence of Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Belur; Swami Atmaprananand of the Belagavi Ashrama; former MLA D.R. Patil; and former Karnataka DGP V.V. Bhaskar.
In his address, Patil noted that Vivekananda’s vision could only be realised when divinity is seen in the service of humanity. He emphasised the need to eliminate untouchability, superstition, and ignorance, particularly in rural areas, and foster the sense of oneness among all people. “Vivekananda’s true message will be fulfilled only when that collective consciousness is awakened,” he added.
Patil also said the state government is working to uplift the most marginalised sections of society by adopting Vivekananda’s progressive vision. Referring to UN standards defining poverty as earning less than ₹200 per day, he highlighted the state’s income guarantee scheme ensuring a minimum monthly support of ₹5,000 per family.
Former MLA D.R. Patil appreciated the Ashrama’s role in building a better society and assured continued support for its initiatives. Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj described the Belagavi Ashrama as a torchbearer of Swami Vivekananda’s values in North Karnataka. Former DIG V.V. Bhaskar also recalled his long-standing association with the Ashrama with pride.
Dr. Mallikarjun V. Joli, chief executive of KLE Cancer Hospital, Belagavi, delivered the vote of thanks.
