The Kittoor Rani Channamma Mini Zoo in Belagavi is quickly becoming a hotspot for tourists, largely due to its newly introduced tiger safari. This unique attraction has captured the attention of visitors, drawing them to the zoo in increasing numbers.
Established in 1989 near Bhutaramanahatti village, about 15 km from Belgaum city, the zoo originally began as “Nisarga Dham.” Back then, it was primarily known for its locusts, earning it the local nickname “Chigari Mala.” However, in 2018, the zoo underwent a high-tech transformation, and by 2020, several animals were brought in, significantly boosting its appeal to tourists.
Today, the Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo boasts 198 animals and birds across 25 species, including lions, tigers, leopards, and bears. The tiger safari, introduced on a 20-hectare portion of the zoo, has been particularly well-received. Last year, the zoo attracted 2.8 lakh visitors and generated ₹1.8 crore in revenue. Plans are now in motion to further enhance the zoo’s offerings by adding a female tiger, zebra, and giraffe.
For many, this zoo has become a one-stop destination for wildlife experiences that previously required longer travel. The consistent rise in tourist numbers is a testament to the zoo’s growing popularity, making it one of Belagavi’s key attractions.
