The Urban Development Minister, Byrathi Suresh, has assured that work on the Kanabargi layout project is set to commence soon. Additionally, BUDA (Belgaum Urban Development Authority) has outlined plans for a 20-acre residential building complex within the Kanabargi area, aimed at addressing the housing needs of lower and middle-income segments. This secondary project is scheduled to begin following the completion of the Kanabargi layout project.
BUDA’s decision to undertake this project comes after a significant gap of 15 years without introducing a new layout, resulting in a substantial surge in land prices. The previous residential project, Ramtirth Nagar layout, underperformed, putting considerable pressure on BUDA to move forward with the Kanabargi project.
However, the Kanabargi project is not without its challenges, primarily due to legal disputes involving around 30 acres of land occupied by farmers. BUDA initially proposed a land-sharing ratio of 60:40 with the farmers, but this was met with resistance.
Subsequently, a revised proposal of 50:50 was accepted by most farmers, except those who own the disputed 30 acres. In this scenario, BUDA is committed to providing 50% of the developed sites to the farmers who have relinquished their land.
In this regard, BUDA Commissioner Shakeel Ahmed stated, “Tender procedures have already been initiated, and pending a smooth progression, site marking operations will kick off within the next two months.”
