Two women from Belagavi have been featured in The Second Wind, a film screened at the prestigious 78th Cannes Film Festival in France. Film by Indira Baikerikar draws from the daughter’s journey as a national swimmer.
Directed by Indira Baikerikar, the film takes inspiration from the real-life journey of her daughter Mallika, a national-level swimmer. What started as a story of one woman’s recovery has evolved into a powerful portrayal of women who face challenges with unwavering strength.
Among the film’s notable faces is Mayura Shivalkar, a breast cancer survivor, athlete, and marathoner from Belagavi. Diagnosed in her early 30s, Ms. Shivalkar turned her battle into a mission—spreading awareness and becoming a source of inspiration. Her journey forms an emotional and compelling part of the film, which skillfully blends fictional storytelling with real-life elements to honour resilient women.
Shrusti Patil, also from Belagavi, plays a prominent negative role in the film, further amplifying regional presence in this international cinematic work.
The Second Wind was filmed in locations across Mumbai, Kolhapur, and notably Belagavi—featuring spots like the KLE swimming pool, Camp area, and Khanapur Road—bringing a local flavour to its urban narrative.
The cast also includes actor Nandinee Khosla, known for her work supporting cancer patients, adding depth to the film’s themes of hope and survival.
Other Indian entries at Cannes this year include Tanvi the Great and Homebound.
