The Belagavi Police Commissionerate has initiated a targeted drive against vehicles plying without number plates or displaying unauthorised fancy plates, stepping up efforts to enforce traffic discipline across the city.
In a special inspection conducted on Friday, traffic personnel booked 126 two-wheeler riders and recovered ₹63,000 in penalties. The operation was undertaken on the directions of the Police Commissioner after officials observed a rise in violations related to number plate regulations.
Action Taken Under Motor Vehicles Act
The enforcement drive was carried out under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Authorities emphasised that vehicles must carry clearly visible, government-approved number plates, as missing or improper plates make identification difficult and could facilitate unlawful activities.
Besides levying fines, officers also ensured that several motorists rectified their number plates on the spot. The Traffic Department has cautioned that such surprise checks will continue and has appealed to the public to comply with traffic rules by installing authorised number plates.
