Stressing the urgency to curb accidents and decongest city roads, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan has called for swift and coordinated efforts among departments to enhance road safety and streamline traffic in Belagavi district.
Chairing the District Road Safety Committee meeting at the DC office, Roshan said, “Managing the city’s growing traffic requires a structured, safety-first strategy. Immediate implementation of a well-coordinated plan is essential.”
He instructed the Police, Transport, and Public Works Departments to work in close coordination to tackle the increasing traffic challenges. Currently, 22 traffic signals are functional in the district, and proposals are in place to construct flyovers at seven major junctions in Belagavi city to reduce congestion and improve connectivity.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to initiate the tender process for appointing planning agencies to draft a comprehensive traffic management project. Agencies submitting proposals must strictly follow the prescribed guidelines before entering the tendering stage. An estimated 4 km of flyover construction is part of the proposed upgrades, and Member Secretaries of the committee have been instructed to ensure timely progress.
Taking inspiration from Kalaburagi’s phased traffic management model — comprising short-term, mid-term, and long-term solutions — Roshan proposed adapting a similar approach to suit Belagavi’s urban dynamics.
AI-Based Solutions on the Horizon
A technical assistant from the PWD proposed the use of Artificial Intelligence to analyze vehicle movement and traffic patterns. Bagalkot has already implemented AI-based software to track and classify two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and buses at intersections.
The official added that integrating AI-enabled cameras through the Smart City initiative in Belagavi could enable real-time traffic data collection, aiding better decision-making and congestion management.
The meeting concluded with a strong emphasis on modernizing traffic systems, adopting innovative technology, and enforcing accountability to build a safer and more efficient road network in Belagavi.
City Police Commissioner Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, District SP Dr. Bhimashankar Guled, Additional SP Shruti, and senior officials from various departments were present during the meeting.
