The Legislative Council on Monday witnessed a heated debate over an alleged case of medical negligence at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital, where reports claimed that doctors removed a patient’s intestine instead of a stomach tumor.
Raising the issue during Question No. 13 (139), Congress MLC M. Nagaraju demanded stern action against the medical staff and hospital administration involved in the alleged incident.
Replying to the concerns, Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil said that the doctors at BIMS had committed no negligence during the surgery.
He noted that the government had examined media reports suggesting that a patient’s intestine was mistakenly removed. However, inquiries revealed that the patient, a chronic alcoholic and tobacco user, had been referred with a diagnosis of intestinal perforation by the taluk hospital. Routine investigations, including USG and sonography, pointed to an appendicular perforation.
Dr. Patil informed the House that a laparotomy was performed on June 20, 2025, and due to swelling at the appendix tip, an appendectomy was carried out. The intestine was checked during the procedure and found to be normal, and no part of it was removed, as confirmed by the institution’s report.
He added that despite ongoing treatment and medical advice, the patient’s family took him away from the hospital on June 22 against medical advice.
Assuring the Council, Dr. Patil reiterated that the surgical team at BIMS Hospital had not committed any negligence.
