The Karnataka Government has cleared the proposal to rename Belagavi Railway Station as Shivabasava Mahaswamiji Railway Station, Belagavi, according to an official communication dated November 5, 2025. The request has now been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for final approval and notification.
The move is part of a broader plan to rename several railway stations under the Hubli Division of the South Western Railway zone.
Belagavi Gets a New Name
Belagavi Railway Station (BGM) will officially take on the name of Shivabasava Mahaswamiji, reflecting the region’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Other Stations Included in the Proposal
Three more stations across Karnataka have been listed for renaming:
- Bidar Railway Station → Channabasava Pattadevaru Railway Station
Bidar district | Station Code: BIDR - Vijayapura Railway Station → Jnanayogi Shri Siddeshwara Swamiji Railway Station
Vijayapura district | Station Code: BJP - Suragondanakoppa Railway Station → Bhaayagad Railway Station
Shivamogga district | Station Code: SMET
Awaiting Centre’s Nod
The state has urged the Union Home Ministry to issue the final notification. Once approved, Indian Railways will begin updating signboards, maps, announcements, and digital systems.
