Belagavi Police have cracked the attempted robbery case at a jewellery shop in Athani with the arrest of two members of a Maharashtra-based gang.
The incident occurred on August 26. The arrested are Vijaya Javeera of Ichalkaranji (Kolhapur district) and Yashwant Gurava of Jarandi (Sangli district). Police seized two country-made pistols, seven live rounds, a car and a mobile phone used in the crime.
Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled said the weapons were sourced from Madhya Pradesh. He added that Hanamant Wandere (Sangli), Aswad Bharat Katakar (Sangli) and Suraj Budawale (Satara) remain absconding.
“The accused wore helmets and masks, but based on clues beyond CCTV footage, our officers managed to trace and arrest two of them. The main accused Vijay faces 11 cases, including murder, dacoity and extortion,” Dr. Guled said, congratulating his team.
Another gang arrested
In a separate case, police arrested three chain-snatchers from Maharashtra — Pradeep Naik, Rajendra Naik and Ankush Lohar, all from Linganur village in Sangli district.
They snatched a mangalsutra and chain from Gauravva Kalashetty while she was heading to her farm from Halalli bus stand via Telasanga Road. Following 15 days of investigation, police recovered 60 grams of gold worth ₹6 lakh and two bikes.
The trio admitted involvement in nine thefts — four in Aigali, two in Athani, one each in Raibagh, Kudachi and Miraj Rural police limits.
Investigation continues.
