Reacting to the surge in cases involving youth carrying dangerous weapons, Belagavi City Police have formed dedicated Anti-Stabbing Squads. The move comes in the wake of a shocking incident where two minors stabbed a student following an argument over a bus seat.
Police have warned that individuals found in possession of knives, swords, or similar weapons will now face stringent action under the Arms Act. Additionally, a rowdy sheet will be opened against them, requiring regular appearances at local police stations during festivals and major events.
Increased Vigilance
Each Anti-Stabbing Squad consists of 5–6 officers assigned to frisk suspects, inspect bags, search pockets, and check vehicles, with a special focus on youth and students.
Worrying Pattern
Authorities have noted a disturbing trend of minors and young adults openly carrying weapons, from pocket knives to swords, in public spaces, often for show, raising safety concerns.
Recent Seizures and Arrests:
- Afsar Abdul Bashir Shaikh, of Mulla Galli, was caught with sharp weapons hidden in his scooter near Sambra Bridge.
- Manju Yallappa Seetimani, from Valmiki Galli, was apprehended while carrying a sword and a woodcutter.
- Rahul Jyotiba Jadhav, a listed rowdy-sheeter, was found with 2.20 grams of heroin near Shahu Nagar and booked under the NDPS Act.
Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase stated, “The objective is to discourage the possession of weapons and safeguard public spaces. Strict legal action will follow for any violations.”
