The outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and bird flu (H5N1) in neighboring Maharashtra has sparked panic in Belagavi district. The health department has heightened its alert in response to both diseases. GBS is a rare autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing weakness, numbness, and in severe cases, paralysis. It typically follows a viral or bacterial infection and can require intensive care if it affects breathing muscles. Bird flu (H5N1), a highly contagious viral disease that primarily impacts birds, can sometimes spread to humans, causing severe respiratory issues and carrying a high mortality rate. Human transmission usually occurs through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments.
The GBS outbreak is spreading rapidly in Maharashtra’s Pune, Pandharpur, Kolhapur, and Akkalkot regions, with cases increasing daily. In Belagavi district, two suspected deaths have been reported, including a 64-year-old man, Yetil Patil, from Dhonewadi in Nippani taluk and a 14-year-old boy from Hukkeri taluk, both believed to have died from GBS.
However, District Health Officer SS Gadad stated that there has been no confirmation linking these deaths to GBS, as neither patient displayed typical neurological symptoms. “We are awaiting the post-mortem reports,” Gadad said, adding that the health staff has been alerted to provide additional support to patients showing symptoms of GBS. He also advised the public to consume safe drinking water to prevent the disease.
Regarding bird flu, it has caused widespread panic in neighboring Maharashtra, where numerous chickens have died. Consequently, the Bidar district administration has imposed a ban on the import of chicken meat and eggs. They also recommended thoroughly cooking chicken to eliminate potential contamination. Gadad reassured that no bird flu cases have been reported in Belagavi, but the district is raising awareness and encouraging proper cooking of chicken and eggs as a preventive measure.
