BJP MP Jagadish Shettar has urged the Union government to expedite the transfer of civilian areas in the Belagavi military cantonment to the city corporation.
In a recent meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, Shettar submitted a memorandum stressing that, as per Defence Ministry decisions and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directions, civilian zones in cantonments must be handed over to local urban bodies following a joint survey.
He pointed out that despite multiple meetings involving Defence officials, the district administration and the corporation, the process has been delayed. The MP handed over documents listing civilian areas in Belgaum Cantonment and urged that they be transferred at the earliest. Copies of the details, he said, have also been sent to the State Chief Secretary and the Defence Secretary in New Delhi.
Shettar further requested the establishment of defence manufacturing industries in Belagavi. The Defence Minister assured him that the issues raised would be examined and necessary action taken, a release from the MP stated.
