Ahead of Kama Dahana and Holi festivities, the Belagavi City Police have announced a temporary ban on the sale and distribution of liquor across the city and certain parts of Belagavi taluk. The measure has been introduced to maintain public order and ensure peaceful celebrations.
The restriction will remain in force from 2:00 PM on March 2, 2026, until 11:59 PM on March 3, 2026. The decision was taken following a report by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), who recommended preventive action considering the large gatherings expected during the festival.
During this period, liquor and wine stores, bars, bar-attached restaurants, clubs serving alcohol, hotel bars, KSBCL depots, and all licensed excise outlets will remain closed. Authorities have also directed that outlets be shut and sealed wherever required to ensure compliance.
The order has been issued by Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase under Section 21(1) of the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965 and Section 31 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963. After reviewing the report, the Commissioner approved the proposal to safeguard law and order in Belagavi city and taluka.
Excise inspectors and sub-divisional excise officers have been directed to enforce the order under Section 21(2) of the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965, and Section 31 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963. Officials have been authorised to initiate legal action against any violations during the prohibition period.
Holi is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Belagavi, but temporary curbs are routinely imposed during major festivals to prevent disturbances and maintain public harmony. Residents have been urged to cooperate with authorities and plan accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
