The Karnataka Cabinet, which met at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, has granted administrative approval to the Public Works Department (PWD) for constructing an elevated corridor/grade separator linking National Highway 48 to Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Circle via Ashoka Circle, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, and Rani Chennamma Circle. The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹275.53 crore.
As per the Cabinet note, the elevated stretch will be 2.03 km long and is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the city’s central areas. The project is being implemented as a flagship initiative of the PWD under the leadership of Belagavi district in-charge minister Satish Jarkiholi.
Earlier, a blueprint prepared by Hubballi-based VLS Consultants had proposed a longer alignment, with the main flyover extending from Sankam Hotel to Dharmaveer Sambhaji Circle (Bogarves) over about 3.6 km. Including connecting sections, the total corridor length was projected at around 4.5 km, connecting NH-48 to Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle via Ashoka Circle and Sangolli Rayanna Circle. The design envisaged a four-lane elevated structure with an 18-metre-wide deck.
The difference between the Cabinet-approved length of 2.03 km and the earlier DPR estimates is expected to be addressed during the detailed execution and tendering stages of the project.
