Malmaruti police have uncovered an illicit liquor smuggling operation in which alcohol was hidden beneath bags of waste material and transported in a goods vehicle. The police seized nearly 900 boxes of illegal Goan liquor valued at over ₹25 lakh and arrested the accused.
Acting on specific information, a police team led by Inspector B.R. Gaddekar carried out the raid. The liquor was being moved from Goa to Maharashtra through Belagavi, with the smugglers attempting to avoid detection by covering the consignment with garbage.
Police suspect the seized liquor was intended for Maharashtra and may have been meant for election-related distribution. City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase commended the alertness of the Belagavi police, and the team involved in the operation has been awarded a cash reward.
“The driver failed to produce any valid documents for transporting around 7,000 litres of liquor worth approximately ₹25–26 lakh. We are investigating both the source and destination of the consignment, and also how the vehicle passed through checkposts without being intercepted,” the Police Commissioner said.
