The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is preparing to commemorate its 175th anniversary with grand celebrations slated for next year. In a recent council session, members passed a resolution to seek financial backing from both the state and central governments for the milestone event. Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed civic officials to draft proposals seeking ₹250 crore each from the Karnataka government and the Centre to support the celebratory plans.
Belagavi (South) MLA Abhay Patil expressed full backing for the initiative, affirming, “I will provide complete support to ensure this historic event is celebrated grandly.”
Founded on December 1, 1851, as the Belgaum Municipal Committee, BCC predates the establishment of the Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1872. It was the first municipal institution formed in the then Bombay Karnataka region. At the time of its founding, it served a population of 23,115 and had an annual revenue of ₹35,460.
