Belagavi’s civic body has extended round-the-clock water supply to four additional wards, taking the total number of wards under this scheme to 14. With the city having 58 wards in all, only about 24% of residents currently benefit from the facility.
The initiative, which started in 10 wards nearly a decade ago, was formally approved in 2018-19 and has been expanded in phases. Two of the newly added wards fall under the Belagavi North Assembly constituency, and two in the South. The remaining 44 wards continue to receive water just twice a week.
While the 24×7 network has been laid with new distribution pipelines, both the upgraded and old systems draw water from the same sources, Hidkal Dam and Rakkasakoppa Reservoir.
On August 15, PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, MLAs Abhay Patil and Asif (Raju) Sait, inaugurated the service by opening taps in different localities. Mr. Jarkiholi stated that the supply would provide round-the-clock water to nearly 2,000 homes in Kanabaragi and nearby areas. At the same time, Mr. Patil indicated that around 1,500 households in Rani Channamma Nagar would benefit.
Mayor Mangesh Pawar, Deputy Mayor Vani Vilas Joshi, BCC members, officials, and residents attended the inauguration.
The new service has been commissioned by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) in partnership with L&T, under the Karnataka Urban Water Supply Modernization Project (KUWSMP).
