A resident of Bailhongal has been cheated of ₹9.23 lakh in an online investment scam after being lured by fraudsters posing as representatives of a fake trading company called Orionex Markets. The scammers convinced the victim that gold prices were soaring and promised high returns on investments made through their platform.
The victim, identified as Praveen Anant Renike, filed a complaint at the District Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Police Station in Belagavi. On October 13, he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown sender claiming rapid growth in gold rates and urging him to invest in Orionex Markets for quick profits.
Praveen clicked on a fake link resembling the firm’s official website and entered his personal details. An online trading account was created in his name on the fraudulent platform. However, when he later attempted to withdraw his earnings, all communication with the scammers stopped, revealing that he had been defrauded.
