The city’s airport is set for a major upgrade with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) investing over ₹322 crore in building a new terminal. The expansion will boost annual passenger handling capacity from the current 0.8 million to 3.5 million, marking a significant step towards positioning Belagavi as a key aviation hub for North Karnataka and supporting decentralised economic growth.
The existing airport, with a 2,300 x 45-metre runway that accommodates Airbus A320 aircraft, has seen steady growth in passenger traffic, from 0.30 million in 2022-23 to 0.34 million in 2024-25. The upcoming terminal is expected to meet this rising demand. Experts also highlight the opportunity to integrate sustainable practices such as solar power, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient lighting, making the airport a model for green infrastructure in regional aviation.
The project is also seen as a driver of balanced urban development. By easing reliance on heavily congested metropolitan airports, Belagavi’s expansion will help spread economic opportunities more evenly. A modern terminal can attract investments, encourage tourism, and generate employment across construction, airport operations, and hospitality.
Additionally, the upgrade has the potential to foster inclusivity. With design features focused on safety and accessibility, the new facility can ensure a gender-neutral passenger experience while creating professional opportunities for women across technical, administrative, and operational roles in aviation.
Although international operations will depend on demand and approvals, the domestic expansion itself is expected to transform regional connectivity. While timelines may vary with land acquisition and regulatory processes, the long-term vision remains clear, a sustainable and inclusive airport that not only increases capacity but also drives equitable growth. Belagavi’s new terminal is envisioned as a symbol of progress, proving that development and sustainability can move forward together.
