According to Police Commissioner Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, the incident occurred around 2 pm on March 17, when the mother and infant were asleep. The accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and administered poison to the baby.
In this shocking case, the 28-year-old accused is said to have killed his 15-day-old daughter at Ukkad village, under the Kakti police station limits in Belagavi district.
The accused has been identified as Bheemarai Banappa Chippadi, while the deceased infant has been identified as Priyanka. A complaint was filed by his wife, Sheela.
Police said the child started crying and developed frothing at the mouth soon after, and died shortly thereafter. The accused allegedly fled the scene following the incident.
Inspector Suresh and his team later secured the accused and recovered the poison substance, which he had disposed of after the crime.
A case has been registered at Kakti police station, and further investigation is underway.
Preliminary information suggests the accused had been insisting that his wife return from her parental home after delivery, while she had told him she would come back after three months. It is also suspected that he was unhappy about the birth of a girl child, though the exact motive is yet to be confirmed.
The couple had married in May 2025, and this was their first child.
