An ₹11 crore proposal seeking crucial repairs and renovation of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi has been submitted twice. Yet, the State government has not cleared it, causing frustration among legislators across all parties. They intend to raise the matter during the upcoming Winter Session in December.
Constructed in 2012 at a cost of more than ₹450 crore to cater to North Karnataka’s administrative needs, the landmark building has not received even a fresh coat of paint in over ten years. Officials report that repeated requests to fix deteriorating infrastructure, replace outdated furniture, repair toilets, and complete other essential works have gone unanswered.
During his recent visit to Belagavi, Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader told reporters that the issue will be taken up in the Winter Session and expressed confidence in the district administration’s follow-up.
Approximately 30 government departments currently operate from the complex, and the increasing number of meetings, training sessions, and events has heightened the maintenance burden. The renovation plan includes repainting the structure, replacing doors, windows, chairs and carpets, repairing internal roads and drainage, and improving the drinking water system.
Despite detailed proposals submitted by the Public Works Department in 2023 and again in 2024, approval has yet to be granted, officials said.
