Belagavi police have intensified their crackdown on the sale and use of glass-coated manja strings, which have caused several injuries and fatalities. Under the direction of City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase, multiple raids were conducted over the past three days, leading to the seizure of 11 rolls from various parts of the city.
Tilakwadi police inspector Parshuram Pujari and his team raided a shop owned by Shubham Sonvalkar in Angol, confiscating three rolls of the banned thread. Similarly, Shahapur police inspector Siddappa Simani took action against a minor in Naavi Galli, Shahapur, seizing eight rolls intended for kite flying.
The action follows several recent incidents where people sustained serious neck injuries due to manja. Last year also saw multiple such cases, prompting authorities to enforce stricter preventive measures. Commissioner Borase has instructed all police stations to intensify inspections and take firm action against those selling or using the hazardous string.
Manja, commonly used in kite fighting to sever other kite strings, remains a significant threat to both humans and birds due to its sharpness.
