Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan on Monday said that soybean crops spread across 35,000 hectares in the district have been damaged due to the pest Helicoverpa armigera (African earworm or stem borer). The worst-hit areas are Murgod, Nesaragi, Bailhongal, and Kittur hoblis.
Addressing the media at his office, Roshan noted that three major insect pests are affecting soybean, with large-scale destruction reported in Kittur, Nesargi, and Murgod hoblis of Bailhongal taluk. A joint survey has already been carried out in these villages to assess losses and extend compensation. The inspection was conducted by representatives of the tahsildar and insurance companies along with agriculture department officials, and a report has been submitted to the government.
The DC confirmed that the government has approved compensation and farmers will begin receiving payments shortly. In addition to soybean, crop loss has been reported across 50,000 hectares in the district, including 30,300 hectares of black gram. Surveys in these areas are complete and compensation distribution will follow.
Horticultural crops over 1,500 hectares have also been affected. Roshan said discussions with concerned departments are underway to set up procurement centres, and a decision will be announced soon.
