Belagavi is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the state government unveiling the design of a proposed flyover that will connect the Bengaluru–Pune National Highway (NH-48) with the Belagavi–Goa National Highway (NH-748).
The multi-lane structure, stretching 7.8 km (with 6.67 km under the PWD’s NH division and 1.12 km under NHAI), will pass through key junctions including Ashoka Circle, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, Rani Channamma Circle, and extend up to Dharmveer Sambhaji Maharaj Circle. Built on nearly 200 pillars, its width will vary from 8 to 40 metres, with sections rising 9.5 to 13 metres to ensure businesses and signage below remain unaffected, similar to metro flyovers in Bengaluru and Delhi.
The ₹4,500-crore project will feature access-controlled lanes, rotary interpasses at Rani Channamma Circle, and ramps near Central Bus Stand, RTO Circle, and Sri Krishna Devaraya Circle. It also includes bylanes linking eight roads leading into the city, easing congestion and providing direct connectivity from North Belagavi localities such as Mahantesh Nagar and Gandhi Nagar to the highways.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan said land acquisition requirements are minimal and can be wrapped up in a few months. He added that coordination between the PWD, NHAI, and Railways is underway to secure swift approvals, with provisions made for future railway track expansion.
Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi noted that Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the project and has been urged to share the cost. Of the total outlay, ₹200 crore has already been sanctioned by the state PWD.
Officials assured that commercial activity will not be impacted and that the flyover will improve travel to Dharwad, Kolhapur, Sambra Airport, and Panaji. Completion is targeted within three years.
