Belagavi’s long-pending need for a dedicated stray dog sterilization facility is set to be fulfilled, with the district administration approving two acres of land in Hirebagewadi village for the project.
The allotted site, located in Survey No. 431, was initially reserved for a Medical Waste Processing Centre. Acting on a proposal from Municipal Commissioner Shubha B., Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan issued a revised order allocating the land for the sterilization centre.
At present, stray dogs caught in Belagavi and nearby areas are sterilized at the Municipal Corporation’s animal husbandry department in Srinagar. However, the limited space there has posed a serious challenge. Corporator Nitin Jadhav had recently highlighted the need for a central shelter to house captured dogs before and after surgery during a general body meeting. The suggestion gained support from the House, with Mayor Mangesh Pawar pushing for its approval.
Once operational, the Hirebagewadi facility will take over surgeries from the congested Srinagar site, providing better space and resources to help control the stray dog population in Belagavi city and its suburbs.
