Illegal sand extraction continues unchecked along riverbanks and streams in Shedegali, Haruri, and Rumewadi villages of Khanapur taluk. Miscreants have reportedly installed filters at various riverbanks and are transporting sand in vehicles during late-night hours.
Sand is being extracted using boats in forest zones and nearby horticulture areas on the outskirts of Shedegali. Massive pits have formed due to rampant sand mining near the Malaprabha River and Alatri streams.
“Indiscriminate sand transportation using tractors and tippers is damaging roads. Forest and police departments are turning a blind eye. When we report this, police claim sand extraction from agricultural land doesn’t fall under their jurisdiction,” said local residents.
“Heavy vehicles used for illegal sand transportation are destroying narrow forest roads, making access to farmlands difficult. Despite raising concerns with the District Collector and departments concerned, no action has followed,” residents of Manturga, Haruri, and Shedegali alleged.
“From midnight to early morning, vehicles loaded with sand travel along state and national highways. Some officials are allegedly taking commissions to allow this,” said sand brokers.
Continuous sand mining is also disturbing wildlife in Malaprabha Pandari and Alatri regions.
Social activist Jyotiba claimed that those responsible for curbing illegal mining remain silent due to political pressure. “Mahantesh must act against this by setting up snake guards on key routes,” he added.
