Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan has announced that auto-rickshaw meters will be made compulsory across the city within the next three months. The step is aimed at streamlining the city’s auto traffic and ensuring transparent fare structures for commuters. He made the announcement during a Meet-the-Press event hosted by the Belagavi Media Association at the Department of Information.
Addressing the media on Thursday, DC Roshan said, “The process of meter implementation is already underway. I have personally chaired a meeting on this matter, and the RTO has conducted three additional meetings. We’ve also consulted with auto driver associations, who have shown willingness to support the initiative.”
Auto drivers have put forth three specific demands, which are currently under consideration. “We are carefully assessing these demands and will act accordingly. Our main objective is to ensure passengers have access to affordable and fair travel,” he added.
Belagavi city currently has approximately 15,000 registered auto-rickshaws. DC Roshan stated that due to the increasing number of vehicles, the issuance of new permits has been put on hold for now.
Rickshaw meters will only be available through authorised distributors, and arrangements for regular servicing will be provided. “The full implementation will take around three months. We are working to ensure the transition is smooth for both drivers and passengers,” he assured.
Auto driver unions have extended their full cooperation. Additionally, DC Roshan emphasized that app-based ride services like Ola, Uber, or Rapido are not currently necessary in the district—news that is likely to reassure local auto operators.
