A central team for Swachh Survekshan 2025 is set to visit Belagavi on Monday (March 10) to evaluate the city’s cleanliness efforts. The Belagavi Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been informed, and a five-member delegation from the central government will conduct the assessment.
Belagavi’s Previous Rankings
Belagavi ranked 198th in the 2023 Swachh Survekshan, slipping from 171st in 2022. The city was not surveyed in 2024, making this the first evaluation after a gap year.
To improve its standing, the municipal corporation has intensified waste management efforts, particularly focusing on waste segregation. Officials report that 80% of the city’s waste is now sorted, saving ₹10 lakh per month. Measures are also being taken to curb garbage dumping on streets.
Citizen Involvement to Influence Rankings
Public participation is a key factor in Swachh Survekshan scores. The central team will seek feedback from residents, and their opinions will significantly impact Belagavi’s rating.
The team will also assess the efficiency of over 1,300 sanitation workers, including direct-salary and contractual employees, to evaluate manpower utilization and cleaning operations.
Revised Swachh Survekshan Framework
For 2025, the Swachh Survekshan Toolkit has been updated with ten key evaluation criteria:
- Visible Cleanliness
- Waste Segregation, Collection & Transportation
- Solid Waste Management
- Access to Sanitation
- Used Water Management
- Mechanization of Desludging Services
- Advocacy for Swachhata
- Institutional Strengthening
- Welfare of Sanitation Workers
- Citizen Feedback & Grievance Redressal
Additionally, projects sanctioned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) will be closely monitored. Any discrepancies found in data verification could lead to strict penalties.
To ensure transparency, MoHUA has implemented several monitoring mechanisms, including surprise inspections, GPS tracking of assessors, a grievance redressal system, and IT-based oversight through the Swachhatam Portal.
The 2025 Swachh Survekshan rankings will be a crucial indicator of Belagavi’s progress in sanitation and waste management. The combined impact of municipal initiatives and citizen feedback will determine the city’s position in the national standings.
