Sampath Kumar Shivanagi, a US-based doctor and philanthropist of Belagavi origin, passed away in Mississippi on February 11, 2025, at 84.
Dr. Shivanagi, a prominent figure in the Indian-American community, had been elected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He made significant contributions to healthcare, including a generous donation that led to the naming of a cancer hospital in Belagavi after him. The KLE Society, in a tribute, acknowledged his ₹8 crore donation. He and his wife, Dr. Udaya Shivanagi, were present during the inauguration of the hospital by President Droupadi Murmu in January 2025.
Born in Athani, Belagavi district, Dr. Shivanagi completed his medical studies at Karnataka Medical College, Hubballi, and Washington College of Medicine in the US. He served as an obstetrician and gynecologist in the US for several decades.
An influential leader in the Indian-American community, Dr. Shivanagi held key roles, including advising the US Secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush, president of the Indian American Forum for Political Education, and president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. He also served on the Mississippi Department of Mental Health Board. Dr. Shivanagi was honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman by former President Pranab Mukherjee.
