In a pre-New Year’s Eve crackdown, the Belagavi City Corporation took strict action on December 27th against hotels for violating cleanliness norms, using plastic, and employing unsafe food colors. The operation resulted in fines totaling ₹70,000 across 10 establishments.
A major portion of the fines—₹50,000—was levied on a single hotel in Shahapur, while ₹20,000 was collected from other violators. Led by Health Officer Dr. Sanjeev Nandre, municipal staff conducted inspections across the city’s north and south zones, including a bar and restaurant in Shahapur.
Acting on complaints of unhygienic practices, Commissioner Shubha B. directed the Municipal Health Department to ensure compliance with food safety standards and eliminate harmful practices like plastic use and hazardous food coloring.
Inspections revealed issues such as unclean kitchens, harmful dyes, and the use of plastic in food delivery. One hotel in Shahapur narrowly avoided closure after agreeing to improve its hygiene, instead facing a hefty penalty.
With the New Year rush approaching, the city has emphasized maintaining hygiene and adhering to safety standards. Health Officer Dr. Nandre’s surprise raids have raised concerns among hoteliers as the Corporation signals its intent to enforce strict compliance.
The Health Department has warned of continued inspections and steeper penalties for future violations, underscoring its commitment to public health and safety.
